Cheshire is a county in the North of England. Historically it was known as the County of Chester after the City of Chester in which the county council is based. The largest town in the county is Warrington with the county having several other large towns such as Crewe, Northwich and Runcorn.
Chester has a long history dating back to before Roman times. There are plenty of Roman exhibits in local museums, with Grosvenor Museum having the best, and many examples of Roman architecture such as the city walls and the amphitheatre. Chester is also famous for it's red sandstone 14th-century cathederal and it's black and white, mock Tudor, timbered buildings. Many visitors explore Chester by walking around the city walls. The walk is about 2 miles (3.2 km) but easy going and very pleasant.
Although Cheshire is widely known as an agricultural county, famous for it's Cheshire Cheese, there have always been industrial centres. The Romans are credited with starting the area's chemical industry with their salt mining around Middlewich and Northwich. Today the bulk of the chemical industries are based in Runcorn.
