Ness Botanic Gardens
 Ness Botanic Gardens: In 1898 Arthur Kilpin Bulley, a Liverpool cotton merchant, started work on his garden. His interest lay in the introduction of new plant species from abroad. His strong belief that he could establish plants from the Himalayas and other Chinese mountain plants led to his sponsorship of expeditions to the Far East.
Bulley allowed public access to parts of his gardens and in doing so he had laid the foundations of one of the United Kingdom's major botanic gardens.
In 1911 Arthur Kilpin Bulley, set up a company, Bees Ltd, to introduce the various new species to the general public. The gardens include breathtaking collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and heathers. His work with rhododendron and camellia was extensive and his introductions were widely used for hybridisation. His influence on the world of gardening was profound and his early expeditions effectiovely launched the careers of two of the most renowned British plant collectors, (George Forrest and Frank Kingdon Ward). Arthur Bulley died in 1942 and 3 years later his daughter presented the gardens to Liverpool University. Included was a generous endowment of £75,000 on the condition they be kept as botanic gardens.
